Gloomtail is a large black dragon and a boss in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. He's the first boss of Chapter 8 and overall the thirteenth boss of the game. Gloomtail is most notably the brother of Hooktail and Bonetail. He's a guardian of the Palace of Shadow.

History[]

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door[]

Gloomtail was first encountered by Mario in the Palace of Shadow during Chapter 8. When discovering that Mario had previously defeated his younger sister Hooktail, Gloomtail became furious and attacked him. After he was defeated, Gloomtail spat out a small treasure chest containing a Star Key that Mario used to advance through the Palace of Shadow.

Attacks[]

As the older brother of Hooktail, Gloomtail retains the same attacks that Hooktail had with an increase in power. Instead of blowing hot, fiery breath, Gloomtail has poisonous breath that can inflict the poison Status Effect. In addition to his stomp attack, he also has a powerful attack called Mega Breath, in which he blows a cloud of toxic yellow gas at Mario. This has an attack power of 13, which can easily cause a victory for Gloomtail if the player is not prepared.

Strategy[]

Being an upgrade/reskin of Hooktail, there are a few differences which makes Gloomtail much more different and difficult compare to Hooktail.

  • Unlike Hooktail, Gloomtail has no weaknesses to any badges to decrease his stats.
  • Gloomtail's Poison Breath can infect a Poison Status effect, which will hurt Mario and/or co if not used the Sweat Treat or Sweet Fest.
  • Gloomtail has no "second battle" after being depleted by all of his health.

As a whole, the battle with Gloomtail is very similar to Hooktail and as such, the streategy remains basicly the same, alto the Player should have Vivian prepped to use Veil if Gloomtail uses his Mega Breath.

Trivia[]

  • Gloomtail may have been 1000 years or older, according to Goombella.
  • Much like Hooktail, if the player returns to Gloomtail's area, he is no longer there.
  • Gloomtail is very similar to Magnus Von Grapple 2.0, seeing as:
    • Both bosses are stronger versions of a Chapter Boss.
    • Both bosses have a black color scheme.
    • Both bosses appear in one of the last Chapters of the game.
    • Both bosses have a mega attack that they preform after losing a certain amount of HP.
  • If Mario brings Flurrie, Mini-Yoshi, Vivian, Admiral Bobbery, or Ms. Mowz when seeing Gloomtail—partners that were not available during the battle with Hooktail—they will confuse him for Hooktail, going off on several descriptions that ether Mario, Goombella or Koops might have told them about Hooktail offscreen.
